The Opposite of Hate

“When knowledge is shared, awareness and understanding become greater.

Myths, and misconceptions are dissipated, and barriers of fear melt away.”     Rev. Dr. Abigail Albert

Dear Friends,

I am reading the book, The Opposite of Hate: a Field Guide to Repairing Our Humanity by Sally Kohn.  The book is an eye-opener for all people who have extreme differences of opinion and sometimes filled with anger due to politics and religion.  She shares her research into WHY people are so angry and hateful.  What I found most important is what really is the opposite of hate.  It isn’t love, or peace, it is CONNECTION.  Here are some of her research observations:

  • “Hate is premised on a mind-set of otherizing. Dehumanizing others is the essential root of hate. We put ourselves on a superiority pedestal.
  • No one is hardwired to hate transgender people, black people, poor people, Muslims, Republicans  or Democrats. Our tendency towards “tribalism” makes us quick to latch on to society’s existing prejudices and burrow deeper into habits of hate.
  • The reflection of society we’ve created is a reflection of ourselves. We can’t change the world until we change ourselves.  Our first step is challenging the hate inside ourselves, to be conscious of our own hate in all it forms.
  • We are all fundamentally linked and equal as human beings and we must support policies and institutions that bring us together, rather than divide us. When we come together in connection-spaces we begin to talk to each other differently with open-mindedness, kindness and compassion of connection -speech.”

Every time Steve and I go to an event or hold an event we meet new people, and create bonds and friendships where we never thought we would.  When we talk and connect with others, the ‘other’ becomes important to us. He or she becomes someone we know personally. It doesn’t matter what faith, race or politics. When we know someone personally, we view them as a new friend.  Friends can agree and disagree on issues, however friends also ‘have each others backs and will stand up for each other.’

Simple Example:

The other day I was in the Verizon store getting my cell phone fixed. Another lady walked in and began waiting patiently until “Kris” was finished with my phone.  As time moved on, I began to be uncomfortable knowing she was waiting. I decided to engage her in conversation.

I apologized for taking so long.  She smiled, I smiled, and a connection was made.   She told me she lost her phone.  Immediately in that one statement both Kris and I looked at her in compassion, knowing losing a phone and all its information can be devastating with far reaching scenarios.   All of a sudden I felt connected to her, a complete stranger.  Connection  brings about understanding and compassion.  I am sure once Kris (notice I used his name , not his position) helped her even more once understanding her situation.

A simple reaching out can make all the difference in the world.

Reach out to all  and at least ask them their name.  Knowing a person’s name starts the connection.

In Love and Connection,

Abigail

Talk Less, Slow Down

Dear Friends,

I came across an article in the May ‘Science of Mind Magazine’ by Mark Waldman and Andrew Newberg about how our brain can only absorb about 5- 10 words and recall them accurately. That is only one sentence or 10 seconds.
They also said the slower you speak the better people retain what you said. In this day and age when everything seems to be going so fast, I feel dazed at times.
Have you noticed the rapid speech on TV shows?  Sometimes we have to rewind them just to figure out what someone said.
Time…    to …   slow …   down …  .
Knowing this about our beautiful brains will help us when we are in a  conversation and want to make a point.  If we can keep our sentences slow and short, they will remember what we said.  We have all been around very expressive people who do not seem to even take a breath when they talk. It is  hard to break in and say, “I agree, I disagree or I have to leave now.”
We all know how important our words are. For they come forth from a belief, and then a thought. Let us make our words be profound, uplifting, encouraging,  beatific and short.
I know in reality we will say many more words in conversation, however be mindful of who is listening to you and for how long. If you are telling a story be sure to pause occasionally and read people’s expression and body language to know if you need to wind it up.
It is better to hear,  “Go on, I can’t wait to hear the end,” rather than see,  ‘the deer in the headlights look.’
Short, Soulful and Slowful,
Abigail

Meaning of Life

Dear Friends,
The other day, Steve and I were talking about the MEANING of LIFE. It is a big topic and I believe the meaning of life is different for everyone due to their personal life experiences.
I would like to share my thoughts about the Meaning of Life in an acronym.
L – LOVE unconditionally. To live is to love without strings attached or expectation of
something in return.
LIVE your life to the fullest with purpose and passion.
I – INSPIRE others to BE their Highest, Greatest and Best Selves. Lift up, not put down.
Follow your INTUITION (God’s Guidance).
F – FORGIVE yourself and forgive others. Forgiving is a Gift you give yourself and others.
E – EMBRACE and actively BE with ALL people regardless of race, color, creed, ethnicity,
gender preference and religion. A beautiful flower garden is beautiful because no
two flowers are alike.
I love the words of Karen Drucker’s Song “You Are the Face of God”

You are the face of God
I hold you in my heart,
You are a part of me
You are the face of God…

You are the face of love
I hold you in my heart
You are my family
You are the face of God

Everyone you look at is the Face of God and we are ONE Family.
Lovingly, Your Sister,
Abigail

Embrace Change

Dear Friends,

CHANGE is the only constant in the Universe.  In the past weeks,  I have been with people who are experiencing major changes in their lives:
Moving from one house to another, different city, different state.
Being layed off from a job they love.
Looking for a new job.
People passing out of our lives, either by leaving the area or moving on to the other side.
Committees, teams changing and learning new ways to work with different people.
Unexpected house and car repairs/replacement
Unexpected health challenges
And much more…
One thing I know for sure is, everything is meant to bless us.  Our attitude and perspective really begin to create the next rung on the ladder.   We have to trust when we let go of one step, there is another step waiting for us.   God’s Will is to Bless and Prosper us.
If we get stuck on the same old merry-go-round, Spirit will find a way to move us or push us off. Nothing stays the same and we are meant to progress and evolve into our greater and higher Selves.  Sometimes it feels like we are kicked in the pants or hit by a 2×4.  These new experiences are not meant to be “bad,” just a wake up call for us to make some changes in our lives and evolve into a greater vision of ourselves.
When we are in this changing process, it is a great time to VISION for what we  really want next in our lives.  Dr. Michael Beckwith shared his ‘Life Visioning Process ‘ in theScience of Mind” magazine this month.  Even if you have not had a change in your life lately, and yet feel a bit dull and purposeless,  try the  Visioning Process.  Your inner God guidance DOES KNOW what you want and need.  Allow it speak to you.
Life Visioning Process Steps to take:
“Find a quiet location and meditate to calm your thoughts and activate your intuition.
Remember, Absolute LOVE is always given, not earned.  Know and accept Divine Love only wants the best for you!
Ask your Higher Self.
What is the Highest Vision of my life? What seeks to emerge in, through and as my life?
What must I become in order to manifest this vision?
What must I release to manifest this vision?
What talents, gifts, skills and qualities do I already possess that will serve this vision?
Give yourself a sacred heartfelt YES, trusting more shall be revealed.
Be grateful and know your Vision is already taking place and in form.”
This is a beautiful process to use at anytime in your life.  Change is Good. Surrender to a Higher Vision of your life. Be it and embrace it.  The Universe is always saying YES for your Highest and Best!
Blessings,
Abigail

Sing Your Song

“The sun’s rays have vision and give us vision. However, it is the birds’ eyes and the two invisible angels by your side that record everything. Nothing goes unnoticed throughout the universe. Wherever there is a vibration, there are eyes and ears. Some energies don’t need ears or vision to see or hear, they can feel what is in your heart and tap into all your sins and fears.”
Suzy Kassem, Rise Up and Salute the Sun: The Writings of Suzy Kassem

May 1, 2018
Dear Friends,
Today on my walk, I heard so many birds singing their little hearts out. I passed one, high in a tree, singing so loudly, and with such exuberance!! I had to stop, listen and watch the joy of song coming through this little bird. It reminded me how important it is to “sing our own song”
I love to sing in the car. That gives me a sense of joy, and sacredness because I only have music that is uplifting and fun in my car. Singing also brings me peace.
One does not have to sing to be happy.
Doing a kindness for another will make your heart sing.
Being a part of a group that helps and supports others with the intention of Good, will make you happy.
Doing an activity or hobby you love to do will make you feel joy and contentment.
What do you love? What makes you happy? What makes your heart sing?
When we are happy, our spiritual vibration is UP and that energy ripples out to all we see and meet during the day. Our happy vibration can travel around the world and affect a person we do not know and may never meet. In our world today, being happy, singing our song (voice, dance, activity, hobby) will contribute to the Consciousness of our planet and raise its vibrations of Good in, through and for all.
Let us do our part for our human family and be happy.
Sing your song,
Speak your truth
Be who God intended you to be.
Joyfully Singing,
Abigail
